Snowbunnies: Roughly 2 years to 3 years
The Snowbunny Room. During this part of the “sensitive periods” the children choose their work from among the self-correcting materials displayed on open shelves, and they work in specific work areas. Over a period of time, the children develop into a “normalized community,” working with high concentration despite interruptions. Normalization is the process whereby a child moves from being undisciplined to self-disciplined, from disordered to ordered, and from distracted to focused, through work in the environment. The process occurs through repeated work with materials that captivate the child’s attention. Thus, the concentration of the child in this class increases through practical life experiences, and the absorbent mind has become “conscious”. In other words, the hand and brain are working in unison to make connections between abstract ideas and their concrete representation. Here, they are becoming ready for more refined sensorial projects to establish a solid base for reading, writing, and math. We help them through the transition into the conscious absorbent mind, by allowing them opportunities to self-correct, discover skills, and act independently within our safe, home-like environment. In the class, you will find that it is rich in music and song materials, art projects, sensorial activities, and practical life skills that are based on the child’s interest. It is here that the magnificent personality of the child truly begins to shine.
